Canvas Craze

From dorm rooms to Pinterest to gift stores, they're everywhere! Canvas crafting is taking over and these creations can be used to decorate or give as gifts. I've always wanted to make canvases, but had a problem... I'm not very artistic. Finally, I decided to simply go for it and did have some good results. I'm here to tell you that even if you think you have no artistic talent, you can still create some beautiful canvases.

What will you need? A canvas, paint and paint brushes, of course. Be sure to have a large paintbrush and also a very small one. The small brush is important for words or any detailed part of the canvas. You also need an idea! Unless you're artistic and can create a masterpiece right on the spot, a plan is always important. Find a canvas example online, draw your idea out on paper first, or even draw it out lightly on the canvas with a pencil.

Remember to start simple. You won't get better if you try to begin with an extravagant piece of work. In fact, it will probably only discourage you if it turns out badly. A quote with some design or an easy picture is best to begin. I started with these two canvases below, and they don't look great, but it was good practice for the others I made.

Here's some things I learned from the beginning. First, you need a small paintbrush for words. I attempted doing the "Dancing in the Rain" canvas with a larger paintbrush, and as you can see, the words are too large and sloppy. The frozen canvas did not turn out as badly as I thought. I cut out an outline of the sisters after printing one off and copied a font online to get the words correctly. You probably cannot tell, but the snowflakes are silver and sparkling. From this canvas, I learned to always paint a background color, even if it's white. In this case, I left the background the white that the canvas already had, but it looks very chalky and any pencil marks do not away entirely.

With my next two I kept to mostly quotes and used small paintbrushes for all of the wording. I thought the black, red, and gold Walt Disney quote turned out well. I realized I did not judge my space correctly halfway through the Cinderella canvas, but managed to get the whole quote in, despite the words being crowded. So, be sure to plan ahead.

Once you get used to making canvases, the artistic part will come more naturally for you. Start small and then as you get better, get bigger! Soon you'll create some like my friends made above. Already I feel more sure about canvas crafting and have made a few as gifts and decorated my dorm room with some others. So, don't make excuses and join the canvas craze with me!
