Halloween Help Too Late!

Did you have a Halloween costume fail this year? Or do you wish you hadn't spent so much money on one? I had two events I had to dress up for this Halloween season. One was a dance (gypsy) and the other was, of course, the day of Halloween (Belle). Although I already had my Belle costume (one my mother and I made years ago), I put together the gypsy costume and helped one of my other friends create a Tinkerbell costume. Yes, anyone can go to the store and buy a costume or order an expensive one online. However, putting together your own is creative, fun, and the costume can look just as great as the store's. Here are some tips for now and later... you never know when you may need to come up with a costume.
1. Look for clothing/objects you already have.
I tied one of my own scarves around my head for my gypsy costume and used my own dangly jewlery. My friend already had a lime green shirt for her Tinkerbell outfit, as well as the green tool skirt. Another example is my roommate's Hermione costume. She already had the black skirt, gray sweater, collared white shirt and shoes, so basically all she bought was the tie (and I believe she borrowed it from a friend). As you can see in the photos, one of my friends dressed up as Tom Cruise from Risky Business, and had everything in her closet! Using things you own is less expensive and just as effective!
2. Keep it low cost with creativity!
Instead of buying full costume sets or pieces, try making parts to your costume, especially using tools that are already lying around the house. I will use the example of my friend who was Tinkerbell this year and needed wings. I came up with the idea of using two wire hangers and a clear plastic wrap. So, I took the two hangers and bent them in the shape of wings, taped them together and wrapped them in the plastic wrap. To add to the wing effect, we bought bright green ribbon and spray glitter for sparkle. Not only did we use the ribbon to cover the tape on the wings, but we used it as wing straps and tied her bun with it. The only things we bought were cheap decorations that could be reused or had leftovers.
3. Remember that homemade costumes are noticed more than store bought ones.
No one cares about a costume that's perfect and lacking creativity due to its origin from a store. Haven't you noticed how impressed people are by those who put their own costume together? It shows effort and creativity. It's also something you can be proud of!
4. Keep your costume!
Just because you have worn it once, doesn't mean it shouldn't or won't be used again. Not that you have to wear it the next year, but you never know when you'll have an event that requires a costume! Perhaps you'll have a Halloween party next year with totally separate people from this year's Halloween celebration and can wear your costume again. You could use the costume you have and tweak it into a different outfit as well. Besides, in a few years, no one will remember who you were in 2015 and you can dress up in that same outfit. So always keep your costumes!!!
